El Salado teems with an astonishing variety of wildlife. Notably, 134 species of birds, 46 plant species, 29 mammal species, and 29 species of amphibians and reptiles have been documented thriving in this ecological haven.

Recognizing its significance, El Salado has enjoyed Municipal protection since 2000 as an Ecological Conservation Zone (ZCE). In a significant milestone, in 2020, it was further designated as a State Protected Natural Area, now bearing the prestigious title of Estero El Salado State Park.
