Huichol Art In Puerto Vallarta

The Huichol

The Huichol or Wixárika people lived In the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range in the States of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango, and parts of the United States of America. Today, they predominantly live in western regions of Mexico around the mountains of Jalisco and Nayarit. 

The Huichol/Wixárika tribe (also known as The Wixáritari – or – The People) have been able to preserve their heritage, including their world-renowned artwork, for sale in the markets and galleries of Puerto Vallarta and The Bay of Banderas.

Arte Huichol Wixarika

Huichol artwork is commonly yarn paintings and three-dimensional objects decorated with vibrantly colored beads. Yarn paintings consist of fibers pressed onto boards coated with wax and resin. The Wixáritari also has a long history of beading, making beads from clay, shells, corals, and seeds, and using them to make jewelry and decorate intricate artwork such as masks, figurines, bowls, and pictures. 

Huichol (pronounced Wet-chol) costumes and clothing are also very colorful, with red, black, and blue embroidered patterns on shirts, trousers, and skirts. Hats are made with palm leaves and decorated with loosely hanging threads, ribbons, or feathers.
