Pico de Gallo: A Recipe for The Perfect Summer Snack

There’s no doubt about it: summer calls for snacks. Bonus points for a snack that’s healthy, fresh and easy on your summer budget. Pico de Gallo is an excellent option that fits all of the criteria above. Plus, you only need 6 ingredients!

Your base ingredients:

  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Cilantro
  • Jalapeño/Serrano Peppers
  • Lime
  • Salt

It’s also super easy to make:

Simply dice your tomato, onion, cilantro, and peppers, and mix in a bowl with lime juice, a little lime zest, and salt to taste.

However, we have a few tips that can help you take your Pico de Gallo to the next level.

  1. When dicing the tomato, do your best to avoid the seeds and pulp in the center. This can water down your salsa and make it a little mushy.
  2. When dicing your peppers, it’s best to use a fork and a knife to avoid getting “spicy fingers”. Also, if you’re not a huge spicy-food-lover, avoid the seeds and the inner “pith” or white veiny part of the pepper.
  3. Play with the ingredients! You can add essentially anything to this base recipe to create something even more delicious! Add mango and avocado for a tropical treat, or parsley and basil for something more aromatic. The options are endless!
