Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit Home to 8 Blue Flag Beaches

In 1985, France started a non-profit organization known as the FEE, or the Foundation for Environmental Education. Since then, the organization has spread worldwide to include over 44 participating countries. According to the FEE, Mexico has 53 certified Blue Flag beaches. A Blue Flag certified beach means it is recognized by trademark to be an environmentally healthy, clean and safe beach for humanity and wildlife.

When it comes to being awarded the Blue Flag certification, the program looks for and tests a variety of things:

  • Excellent bathing water quality. Meaning the water must reach the water quality standard set by the program or the municipality; whichever is higher.
  • An established beach management committee to ensure cleanliness and maintain environmental laws and regulations in the area.
  • Safety, accessibility, regular maintenance, and presence of waste disposal bins are a few other things that accreditors will look for when testing for Blue Flag certification beaches.
