Looking Back in Time: A Brief History of Puerto Vallarta

Discovered by the Spanish in the early 1500s, the bay was named Banderas Bay or the Bay of Flags because native groups in the area would carry lots of flags and banners with them into battle. Throughout the 16th century, many used Banderas Bay as a stop-point along the Pacific coast. Not surprisingly, the region around the bay also served as a convenient hideout spot for pirates.

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, high up in mountain towns there was a booming gold and silver mining industry. These small towns such as San Sebastian del Oeste, Talpa de Allende and Mascota can still be visited today for a journey back in time.

By the year 1963, talk of the stunning place known as Puerto Vallarta began to spread like wildfire. The gossip reached all the way to Hollywood, and the famous movie cast of Night of the Iguana made their way south to work on a production that little did they know would change the future of Puerto Vallarta forever.
