Día de los Muertos Celebrations in Puerto Vallarta

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is most likely one of the most unique cultural celebrations worldwide. When it comes to typical Western culture, celebrating “the dead” isn’t an awful common thing to do – however, Mexico and Latin America have a truly enchanting way of celebrating those who are no longer with us.

In Puerto Vallarta, from October 28^th to November 2^nd, visitors and locals alike will have the opportunity to indulge in this unique celebration through a variety of visual displays and altars on the city’s iconic Malecon boardwalk. It is custom to decorate these altars with cempasuchil or marigold flowers, which are believed to lead the way from the realm of the dead to the realm of the living. Other commonly found items on Mexican Day of the Dead altars are candles, pan de Muerto (a sweet bread), photographs of the deceased, colorful flags and tissue paper cutouts, and any items that may have been especially enjoyed by those whom are being remembered.

November 1^st, is recognized as Dia de Todos Santos, or as the day that children who have passed will come to visit those in the realm of the living. On November 2^nd, or Día de Los Fieles Difuntos, all those other than children who have passed will come to enjoy the spirit of the offerings left on altars by their loved ones.
